PhD Research Fellowship in Okinawan Studies, University of Oslo
One Doctoral Research Fellowship (SKO 1017) in Okinawan Studies is available at the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages, University of Oslo. The PhD candidate will take part in the ERC-funded project “Whales of Power: Aquatic Mammals, Devotional Practices, and Environmental Change in Maritime East Asia”, led by Aike P. Rots. Whales of Power is concerned with the comparative study of human-cetacean relations in maritime East Asia, as expressed in popular worship practices and beliefs in different parts of the region. We will examine several of these traditions through a combination of historical and ethnographic research. Marine mammals and associated worship practices will serve as a prism through which we approach human responses to socio-economic and environmental change in Asian coastal communities. The project has three important theoretical objectives: 1) apply recent theoretical developments associated with “environmental humanities” to the comparative study of popular religion; 2) reconsider the role of local worship traditions in the Asian Secular Age, examining the new meanings attributed to ritual practices; and 3) establish a new comparative paradigm in Asian studies. The PhD candidate will work on marine mammals, sacralisation, and environmental activism in Okinawa. S/he will examine claims that the dugong has traditionally been seen as a sacred animal, associated with creation myths and the Ryukyu royal institution. In addition, s/he will analyse the current significance of the dugong as a critically endangered species which has come to symbolise the preservation of Henoko Bay, an area with high biodiversity, where a large new military base is currently under construction. Through interviews and participant observation within activist communities in Okinawa, the PhD candidate will explore the different meanings attributed to the dugong today, and explore internal debates about the significance of Okinawan “heritage” and of “sacred” animals and places in contemporary struggles for environmental protection and self-determination.
Qualifications: A Master’s degree or equivalent in Asian area studies, religious studies, social anthropology, environmental humanities, indigenous studies, or a related discipline. In special cases, the Faculty may grant admission on the basis of a one-year Master course following an assessment of the study programme’s scope and quality. The Leadership US-Japan Program - US-Japan Foundation
The US-Japan Leadership Program (USJLP) launched in 2000 with the purpose of developing a network of communication, friendship and understanding among the next generation of leaders in each country. The relationship between two of the world’s most powerful democracies and economies has become so complex and broad-ranging that it is beyond the ability of governments or specialists to manage. Yet it continues to suffer from misunderstandings, neglect or stereotyped images of each other that arise from our very different histories and cultures. With the goal of bridging the gap between East and West, the Program fosters a continuing dialogue among future leaders in a broad variety of professions. It starts this process by bringing some 20 young leaders (ages 28-42) together from each country for two intensive weeklong conferences over two years, with discussions revolving around historical and current issues in bilateral relations, as well as issues reaching beyond our two countries. Through serious conversation as well as recreation and shared cultural activities it seeks to nurture lifelong friendships. The Program is designed to keep the leaders in touch with each other throughout their careers through a dedicated website and member directory, frequent reunions and newsletters, and online social networks. To date, 431 young leaders have participated in USJLP. The Program is managed under the leadership of Dr. George Packard, President of the US-Japan Foundation, with the assistance of Mr. Tomoyuki Watanabe, Japan Representative, and two dedicated Program Directors in New York and Tokyo. An Advisory Council of Japanese and American Fellows (participants who successfully attended previous conferences in both the U.S. and Japan) of the Program acts as the main alumni voice and lends support and council to the Program’s development and activities.
Qualifications: The Scott M. Johnson Fellows Selection Committee will be asked to present recommendations to the Foundation from among the pool of applicants. Due consideration will be given to diversity of gender, political, regional, social and educational backgrounds. The final decision on Delegates will be made by the Foundation. The Foundation intends to notify all applicants of the decisions in February 2019.
